The Skimmer offshore fishing team decided to take a break from the awesome local bass fishing and run offshore. We are pleased to report that our first trip to the Hudson produced some nice fish. Once again we took Sal Locasio's 30 ft Grady White - Loco Jo on a Tuesday day trip with a crew of Sal, Chris Madonia, Scotty Craig and myself. We left the dock at 3:45am and had lines in the water by 7:15am. We drove past some life at the tip of the Canyon to work an area further east which had a very nice temperature break. With in 45 minutes we had our first knock down going 2 for 2 on Yellowfin to 50lbs. Shortly after that we had our first Mahi of the day and released another small guy. The next action we had was about 10:00am and we had 5 lines go tight and we went 4-5 on Yellowfin to 60lbs. A lot of bait in the water and huge pods of Dolphins were working the area. We had another nice size mahi(16lbs) in the boat by 10:30am. Then we had our biggest opportunity of the day when we had a Bigeye crash our green spreader bar and almost spool a 50. After a few minutes he broke a heavy duty snap swivel which left us disappointed and frustrated that an equipment malfunction cost us a shot at a nice Bigeye. Things quieted down for most of the afternoon until we connected with a boat working the Hundred Square who just had 5 lines go tight and had several nice size Yellowfin in the boat and were fighting a huge Bigeye. We picked up and ran to that area and were rewarded with 4 more Yellowfin to 55lbs. Two hours and 20 minutes later the boat that called us on the fish( Lonnie Anne out of Babylon) were still fighting the Big Eye and the fish had just taken another run and 400 ft of line. We would have liked to stick around and find out how big the fish was but 6:30pm was our stopping point. I sure hope they landed that fish. Several Bigeyes were taken today along with a number of nice Yellowfin, so check the weather and get a crew together and take a shot at some nice tuna for the table. Good Luck and safe fishing. Weather and work schedules permitting, we will be back out at it again as soon as we can. As you would say Al, another beautiful day on the water with a great crew. ------Gary Arnold
