Fishing Reports 2010
Read MoreAnd another nice cooler full of Mahi. Every pot in the Canyon was loaded with Mahi. We caught enough for the eight man crew and left the rest for some other anglers to have fun with. This is also one of the tastiest fish in the ocean. Boy, this week I am going to have some good meals. Can't wait.

Today I fished with David and Matt Kroin (right and left) and their sons Brandon, Justin and Sam (front row left, right and center).
We had a great morning of fluke fishing setting a new record for the most fluke on a half day trip. 79 fluke with not one keeper but the action was incredible. Sam had the biggest fish, Justin had the most and Brandon held his own with the second most fish and a cool slick method with the rod.
It was non stop action and everyone had a great time.
The kids really enjoyed the boat ride and I gave them a little speed and some bumps and they loved it.
Another great day on the water with a great crew.

Today I fished with Doug Modico and three of his kids. Jackson, Sam and Maggie (left to right).
We had a good morning of fishing on a very hot day. We ended up with two nice size triggerfish, a nice porgy and a keeper fluke for the table.
Everyone had a good time.
"Gulp" chartreuse minnows worked the best today.
Another excellent day on the water with an excellent crew.

I fished with Mike DeSimone on his awesome 36 Yellowfin center console. His buddies Matt and Mike rounded out the crew.
It was a beautiful ocean as we headed out to the bluefin grounds about 50 miles offshore.
We left at 3:30 am and were fishing at 5:15 am.
We had a fish within 15 minutes on a jig.
The sunrise just said it was going to be a good day and it was.Matt and Mike both hooked up on fish. Matt's fish was on a jig and Mike's was on a free floating sardine.
It was an amazing battle because both fish wrapped around each other five times. We had to do the rod dance and unwrap the lines.
We were successful and manages to bring both fish to the boat for clean releases. And Mike DeSimone.
Thanks Mike for a great day on a most awesome boat. We left the tuna grounds 50 mile from Fire Island Inlet at 3 pm and were at the gas dock in Babylon at 4:20. We ran at 55 MHP and were very comfortable. The 36 Yellowfin is truly a long range day boat fishing machine.

Today I had the pleasure of fishing with a great crew out of Seaview.
I fished with Phyllis and Marco and their girls Mia (middle), Lila (spelling?) on right and Talia (front left).
We had a great time fishing for fluke in the inlet. There were tons of fish and the girls had a great time landing at least 40 fish. Gulp bait worked great today. It was excellent action and the girls honed their fishing skills learning to set the hook and work the fish to the boat. We had a couple of fish about 19 inches but no keepers today. It didn't seem to matter much as the action was good and everyone had a good time.
This was a great crew on a beautiful day.

My good buddy Chris Madonnia sent me some photos he shot from his boat on yesterday's trip.
Chris had a great day also and they were packed up and ready to head home when we hooked up with a big fish. They were kind enough to stand by and take some great photos.
Here is Tim putting the wood to a big fish. The boat Ariel, a beautiful sportfish was kind enough to move to give us some room. I must say that everyone in the bluefin fleet are totally gracious and give way. It's a basically catch and release fishery so why not. Thanks Ariel. The fish finally came up a little at a time. Brad brought it to the boat. It went well over a hundred and probably was about 130 to 150 and hooked in the side.
I think the fish was hooked in the mouth in the beginning because I saw line chaffs along the gill plate. I figure that the hook pulled during the fight and then got snagged in its side. The last 30 feet were tough bringing it in sideways. I put a little extra pressure on the RonZ jig and it pulled from the skin and the fish swam away.
What a day. Thanks for the photos Chris.

Today I fished with Brad Brown out of Saltaire.Tim C. Smith joined us on the "Skimmer" worked the deck in addition to taking some great video and still shots. We took the ride to the bluefin grounds about 50 miles offshore. It turned out to be a great trip with perfect weather and super fishing.
Here is Brad pumping a big one to the boat.We hooked 8 fish pulled the hook on one, broke two off and brought five to the boat. At quitting time a big one hit a dead sticked RonZ lure which looks like a black eel with a weighted head. We all took turns with the big one which turned out to be about 140 pounds and foul hooked in the side. We got it to the boat and released it. Even Captain Al got to do some pulling. This fishing outfit caught three fish including the two biggest both over 100 pounds. It is a cut down Seeker 909 blank with a Thynnus 12000 spooled with 60 pound Power Pro hollow braid.
Brad finally got the fish to the boat for the release.
After this one we were all shot. It was about noon so we decided to head home. The ocean was flat and I ran the "Skimmer" back to Saltaire and we were home at 2 pm.
A great and very memorable day on the water.

P.S. more photos and video to come.8/11/2010
I sailed with Ed Mooney and his crew on Ed's super equipped smooth riding down easter "Road to Happiness". We did a tuna jigging trip with a great crew consisting of Skip doing the driving, Jim, Kevin and Henry.
It was an excellent day of fishing fun and camaraderie.
A short video piece of the ride out to the grounds and the crew.7/31/2010
Today Luke and I fished with Bob Antolini and his crew on the Weasel.
We did a canyon trip to the Dip and then the Tails.
It was a beautiful day and we caught fish. We ended up with four yellowfin tuna and dropped a blue marlin by pulling the hook.
Here Luke and Bob are waiting for the action to begin.7/30/2010
My son Luke is home on a visit from California where he now lives. We did some fishing and had a great time.
We caught our limit of fluke while fishing way southeast of Fire Island Inlet. Fishing was good in 75 to 85 feet of water. There was no wind so I did it by slow trolling. It was fun and we plan a fish fry this weekend for the whole family. We did some exploring and found some bunker schools. As soon as we snagged a couple we had striped bass hooked up. Also big blues on the schools.
It looks like we will have at least a few resident fish on the schools from time to time so it looks good for the rest of the season with a chance to catch a bass at any given time weather permitting.
It was great being able to fish with Luke again. I am really enjoying his company.
Another excellent day on the water.

I spent the weekend on the Hook anchored off of Fire Island. My wife and I had front row seats to the approaching squall line. The wind and rain came down so hard the visibility was reduced to zero. Luckily the anchor didn't pull during the height of the blow. After the front passed through we had a tranquil ride back home.
Bryan Kearon from North babylon sent skimmeroutdoors.com his link to video he shot when the storm blew through.

Today I fished with Geoffrey Mott, his son Geoffrey, his nephew James Sievert and their pal Kevon Johnson (right to left).
We had a fun morning of bottom fishing and fluke fishing.
We caught a nice bunch of trigger fish porgies, small seabass and even a blowfish.
We then did some fluke fishing with hot action and one keeper.
It was a good time with a good crew on a very hot day.
Another excellent day on the water.
