I fished with Brad Brown of Saltaire today. We had a great day drifting live bait. We caught a bunch of bluefish and a big striped bass. The bass weighed 42 pounds and didn't have a belly. It was 48 inches long and put up a hell of a fight on very light tackle. We caught it on a Rogue LSW 705C rod with a Shimano Catala reel which was meant for bluefish or weakfish.
skimmer > It was a real thrill for Brad and a beautiful fish. He is having a bunch of people to the beach for the Labor Day Holiday and they are all going to eat plenty of striped bass. It was also a beautiful day on the water.

We tried for fluke in the ocean where I was doing good last week but nothing was happening. The ocean laid right down and is beautiful so it looks like a fine weekend to run to the canyon for all you bluewater fishermen. There is lots of bait in the bay and I look forward to a dynamite fall run.

I fished with Brad Brown and Lloyd Taft today. We went looking for the bluefin tuna with light tackle but didn't find any. We saw a couple but nothing like two days ago. We trolled most of the day and caught green bonita and blues. We then fluke fished and caught a couple but it wasn't anything much to speak of. It was a beautiful ocean and we saw some neat stuff and had a good time. It was one of those days when you have great expectations but the fish don't cooperate. Such is the way of fishing. The kids came down to the dock at Saltaire when we returned and wanted to be a part of the picture.

I fished today with Lloyd Taft, Brad Brown and their buddy Fred. We trolled for tuna in the Linda Wreck area and found a lot of nothing. We found some floating debris and trolled and cast for 6 Mahi mostly small but one good one. We headed back inshore where we saw bluefin tuna in the morning. They were there and we connected with the bluefin. It made the day on what was otherwise a slow fishng trip.

A buddy of mine fished Southwest of the inlet today and had bluefin, bluefish and dropped a white marlin all within 7 miles of the inlet.

Things are looking up.

skimmer > When fishing around the offshore reef for fluke, work the edges of the structure. The big fluke hang close to the bottom structure waiting to pick off some unsuspecting little baitfish. Watch your sonar recorder closely and try to drop your fluke rig as close to the wreckage as possible. If you do this you will surely catch a doormat as a reward. This is a shot of two fluke over 6 pounds and a 12 pound bluefish caught on the edge of a piece of structure on the offshore Fire Island Reef.
skimmer > When fishing schools of bunker for bass it is often more productive to use a chunk of bunker rather than a whole live fish. Bluefish which are usually also chasing the bunker will slash the bait into pieces and the bass will wait below and vacuum up the chunks. If you offer a chunk, you will probably catch more bass than bluefish. This is me with Brad Brown, Stanley Tucci and Lloyd Taft with a great catch of big bass caught on bunker heads and whole live baits.
skimmer > Lots of anglers have a negative attitude about the culinary rewards of preparing bluefish for the table. I happen to disagree and find that bluefish up to 4 pounds are very tasty but only when they are handled properly after being caught. When I catch bluefish for the table I immediately bleed the fish and get it on ice. The flesh will be firm and sweet when it is cooked and the flavor is excellent. This is Brad Brown of Saltaire with his daughter and a nice load of bluefish and weakfish headed for the barbecue.
