Location: South of Ocean Beach
Photo Description: My son Jake caught and released this huge Sturgeon that he snagged while jigging for Striped Bass on November 3rd south of Ocean Beach. He was on the rod for over 30 minutes and I'm sure he will be telling this fish story for many years to come.

I have been very successful with the use of Circle Hooks, not only
has it increased my hookup ratio but it makes it very easy for a quick
catch and release. The beauty to these hooks is that not only do the
larger hooks (I use a red Gamakatsu 7-0) work well with live bait but
the smaller ones work when clam chumming. You can see from the photo
how nicely they work and why they are the choice in many catch and
release tournaments.
There is a trick to setting the hook but once you learn it you will
be rewarded with some quality hook-ups and are able to release fish
safely. Anyone who would like to share best practices is more than
welcome to stop over at The UPS Store and talk about it.

Once the wind layed down enough I was able to make a long trip in
the ocean to the east to some of my favorite spots with my Boston
Whaler. Here away from everyone else here Billy Connaughton and I
were able to jig bass to 40lbs on Sunday and Monday. Finding herring
in the ocean and shad in the inlet (there is also bunker in the bay to
the east in the Islip area) we had some choice baits to drift on some
of my favorite spots inside FI inlet. Billy and I continue to catch
fish in the high 30’s on the out going tide all in all we had a great
2 days of striper fishing.

Hey guys and gals don’t forget The UPS Store photo contest you do not
have to be at the Riverview to win we will just announce the winner
there. The $500.00 cash prize is up for grabs and now is a great time
to practice catch and release!9/25/10
For the past couple of days there have been large schools of small stripers sitting just east of FI Inlet and we have bin scoring well with small 005 green tailed diamond jigs. Inside has also been producing plenty of small stripers in the 14lb range. Today Les Gobler and myself where finally able to catch some quality size fish, we had three fish 28lbs to 36lbs on live bait inside the FI inlet. I am holding a 33lb weight in at Saltwater Tackle in West Islip.

Babylon and Long BeachLes Gobler and I closed the Fluke season at Montauk. Fishing the south side of the point in front of the Radar tower we scored with somefanatic fishing. Here we are at Star Island weighting in fish of 8.4 and 9.9 lbs. These where the 2 biggest of some of the 12 keepers we
had on Monday 9/6/10 most fish averaged in the 6lb range and accounting for 2 more in the 7lb class. Just a note here I have done this for some 10 years now and have account for 3 10lbs on this same week in the same spot.

The day had promised calm seas with a slight SE swell in the PM. As would have it, the day was far from calm. Ended up having to use a sea anchor to be able to work the jigs with any success. After encountering a small mechanical issue at the start of the day, we still made a good day of it. Arrived on the fishing grounds about an hour and a half behind schedule but still managed 8 nice fish for the day! After the first 10 -15 miles of the return trip, the ride was beautiful ! A great day was had by all.

After fishing Blue water with the Laura G on Wednesday accounting for over 20 Bluefin at the boat Les Gobler, George Yurcak (not pictured) and myself stay behind and fluke fish over the weekend. We found a new body of fish has moved in at 75ft of water off Ocean Beach water tower and where able to get 12 keepers with many fish over the 5lb mark here Les and I hold fish 7 and 8 lbs. I returned Sunday to the same location with the Brownyard brothers on their Everglade CC "Scattered Cash" and duplicated the day before. The choice bait seem to be some real nice Large Peruvians with squid strips of which we pick up at Saltwater Tackle in WI.

Kevin Winter, Kevin Krause and Bobby Conlin had an incredible bite 45 mile SE of the Fire Island Inlet. 17 Bluefin were brought boatside and we dropped or broke off another 6. We fished with Hammered Jigs and pink sardine jigs for non-stop action. By 11 am we headed back home.

We had an incredible day jigging Bluefin Tuna 44 miles southeast of Fire Island Inlet on my friend Chris Carangi's boat "Comanche" . Our crew was Chris's son Nick and my two boys Jake and Max along with Pete Mercier & Tommy Hoyler. Our biggest fish was 91 pounds and all fish were caught on Pink jigs.
Jack AlbaneseWell we took first place in a fluke fishing contest for the South Shore Marlin and Tuna Club's Fluke Shootout and caught our limit of Fluke and threw back several keepers. We were 13 miles southeast of Fire Island Inlet in 100 feet of water. Whole squid was the bait of choice today and we had one 8 1/4 lbs and several fish 7 and 6 lbs.

Took a ride on my buddy Shawns 31 Bertram in search of some bluefin along with John, Mike and Brendan. Went 4-7 on the bluefins, all on the jig. Largest fish was around 125 lbs, but had to release him being we already had a 44 incher in the cooler. Great day on the water.

Ocean East of FI Inlet
Took my friend Jeff K from Greenlawn and my son Sean . Went out early; found a med sized pod off by ourselves. Got our first fish in about 10 minutes, 2 more shortly thereafter and that was it. Final tally Jeff 41 lb (photo, released) and 30 lb kept for table; Sean 35 lb released; Me Zippo. Fun morning.7/11/2010
Had a great family fishing trip on Sunday. First pod of bunker we found just outside Fire Island Inlet produced a 25 lb bass for my 9 year old son Max. Went inside the inlet near the Sore Thumb and caught 20 short fluke but managed one nice 6 pounder and a few cocktail blues.

Ocean off Robert Moses Needle
After a long (but great) day at the beach, the kids ( sean ,ava and elle) and their friend Finn wanted to take a ride in the ocean. Hmmm sounds good to me. We found a few pods east of the inlet. Sean snagged up a bunker and about 5 mins later set the hook on a nice fish that was ripping line; He wanted to get his friend Finn a fish so he handed it off to him. Finn boated his first ever fish – I estimate right around 40 lbs. My wife Kelly caught one that was around 20 lbs; I caught and released another one that was a little bigger than the one finn caught. Even my 2 ½ yr old elle got in on the action reeling in bunker. Line of the day from finn – “this is better than playing Nintendo fishing” . Yup.
John DallThe Skimmer offshore fishing team decided to take a break from the awesome local bass fishing and run offshore. We are pleased to report that our first trip to the Hudson produced some nice fish. Once again we took Sal Locasio's 30 ft Grady White - Loco Jo on a Tuesday day trip with a crew of Sal, Chris Madonia, Scotty Craig and myself. We left the dock at 3:45am and had lines in the water by 7:15am. We drove past some life at the tip of the Canyon to work an area further east which had a very nice temperature break. With in 45 minutes we had our first knock down going 2 for 2 on Yellowfin to 50lbs. Shortly after that we had our first Mahi of the day and released another small guy. The next action we had was about 10:00am and we had 5 lines go tight and we went 4-5 on Yellowfin to 60lbs. A lot of bait in the water and huge pods of Dolphins were working the area. We had another nice size mahi(16lbs) in the boat by 10:30am. Then we had our biggest opportunity of the day when we had a Bigeye crash our green spreader bar and almost spool a 50. After a few minutes he broke a heavy duty snap swivel which left us disappointed and frustrated that an equipment malfunction cost us a shot at a nice Bigeye. Things quieted down for most of the afternoon until we connected with a boat working the Hundred Square who just had 5 lines go tight and had several nice size Yellowfin in the boat and were fighting a huge Bigeye. We picked up and ran to that area and were rewarded with 4 more Yellowfin to 55lbs. Two hours and 20 minutes later the boat that called us on the fish( Lonnie Anne out of Babylon) were still fighting the Big Eye and the fish had just taken another run and 400 ft of line. We would have liked to stick around and find out how big the fish was but 6:30pm was our stopping point. I sure hope they landed that fish. Several Bigeyes were taken today along with a number of nice Yellowfin, so check the weather and get a crew together and take a shot at some nice tuna for the table. Good Luck and safe fishing. Weather and work schedules permitting, we will be back out at it again as soon as we can. As you would say Al, another beautiful day on the water with a great crew. ------Gary Arnold
