I continue to work on Tony's Mako. Today we accomplished a major feat. We removed the main tank and finished the boat deconstruction. You can see that the tank coffin is in great shape and ready to receive the new tank from Alloy Welding.
There is a lot less to do on this job as compared to my boat last year. Tony's boat had solid floors, transom and bow casting platform. Now what remains is for Pete Johnston to do all the fiberglass patch work which is pretty extensive and then sand everything to make it ready for Awl Grip paint.
When it comes back from paint at Perfect 10 paint shop we will put her back together.
It is a tough job to remove the tanks but we came up with a new innovative tool. We spot welded two 12 inch sawzall blades together to make a total of 16 inches. This blade was able to cut all the way to the bottom of the tank coffin and free the tank. We just had to pry bar it to break it free from the underlying foam.I then cut two access hatch ways in order to get at the fill lines and vent lines. It was a tough job but worked out using a saber saw and the never outdone sawzall. When I chipped away the foam it revealed badly corroded and brittle hoses. I removed the hoses and fills and vents. Cleaned up all the area so that we are now ready to install the new fill cap and vent. We will only use one of the two sets of fill pipes and vents. We will replace the 80 and 40 gallon tanks with one 120 gallon tank, one fill and one vent. We will leave the other set intact in case the connected ones ever fail. We can always switch to the other leads. These openings will be covered with deck hatches and they can also serve for storage of small items.
This is a shot of the main tank. I had signs of extensive pitting and we were able to smell gas odor. I believe there was a pin hole somewhere that was just seeping a little gas but the foam was keeping it to a minimum.
We are having Phil from Alloy Welding in Farmingdale making the new tank along with the new bow rail and console handrail.
Another great day at the shop.

The boat project is going well.
Today I got into the gas tank work. I removed the coffin lid and discovered a really ugly mess. The senders were rusted and covered with water that was trapped in the foam.
The foam was soaking wet especially in the aft area. I probably removed 150 pounds of wet foam just from the top of the tanks.12/20/2010
I hunted in the morning with Nick Santos. We set up early and waited on dawn.
Birds were flying but not very interested in our rig.
The same situation as I had last week in Freeport with huge bunches of birds. The broadbill are just looking for big black patches of their own and not very interested in a couple of dozen decoys. A couple of dumb ones came by and we had some shots and bagged a couple.
I knocked down a bird and a second later a peregrine falcon flew over our heads and headed for the downed bird.
It tried a few times to pick it up out of the water but couldn't quite grab it. A bunch of seagulls were harassing it and it finally gave up.The bird that I killed and that the falcon was trying to grab was this beautiful redhead.
I didn't actually know it was a redhead because of the back lighting. He was flying with scaup and looked just like one of them when silhouetted so I was very surprised when we retrieved it.
It was a good morning hunt. Nicky and I had a good time.
Another good day on the water.

I hunted today with Jim Falotico on his 17 TDB. We hunted to the west around Freeport. Jim's boat is top notch and he has rigged it to the max. Beautiful decoys.
There were at least 15,000 brant in the area but not a lot of other waterfowl. We saw a few bufflehead and a few black duck but not much else.
We bagged a couple of brant and bufflehead. It was a beautiful day but pretty cold. Jim had to break ice with a big ax in order to launch our boat in the morning.
We set out our decoys and waited on the birds. There were a lot of birds flying but not many coming to the decoy. I think there are just so many brant around that they are used to landing with hundreds and not interested in a dozen decoys. We had some passing shots and it was a good morning on the water.
Another memorable day of hunting.

We started the boat project. We have another 23 foot Mako 1979 to refurbish. The boat belongs to my friend Tony Daidone and he wants it restored and looking good. The boat is in real good shape structurally but just needs some finishing and updating.
We are into it pretty good with all hardware, wood and console removed.12/2/2010
ADDING MORE ROOM TO GEORGES SHOP AT FMT.
George is going to do another boat makeover on another 23' 1979 Mako just like mine. He decided he needed more room in his shop to do the job and the bathroom had to go.
He called in an expert at demolition, his son Steven.
Here is Steven doing what he likes best.
Captain Al LorenzettiIt was crazy action with fish fighting to get at the plug.
There were gannets diving all over the inlet with schools of fish on all the outer edges.
There are fish all over the place and more bait in the water than I think I have ever seen in our area.
Another great day on the water.

I did a sea duck shoot today with Rich Santos and his son Nick.
We had a good shoot taking our limit by about 1 pm.
There was a ton of bait around and some herring to the west of the inlet. A bunch of boats scored real good with bass on jigs to 25 pounds south of Tobay in about 50 feet of water. The fish are on the move now. The east area by Davis Park was also red hot again on Sunday.
Fishing and hunting are real good so get out there.
Another great day on the water.

There was a red hot bite on striped bass today east of Fire Island Inlet by Davis Park on jigs. Fish to 50 pounds.
We had fish in the inlet area on plugs to 20 pounds.
Fishing is red hot so get out there.
It looks like it will blow tomorrow but Sunday looks like the day to run.

Today I fished with Mike Gantcher and his guests Craig and John (center, left and right).
We had a small window of opportunity to fish in the morning. We tried plugging several spots with no luck. I think most of the fish have left the back bay areas.
We fished eels near the inlet and scored with a bass of about 15 pounds.
It was a nice day and we all had a good time.
Another excellent day on the water.

I fished today with Mark Epstein and Anthony DeBlasio.
We had a great day of striped bass fishing in the ocean to the east of Fire Island Inlet.
It was red hot fishing all morning on jigs and plugs.
There is a huge amount of bait and fish in the area. We also had bluefish to 15 pounds and the action was non stop.
It was a most beautiful day on the ocean with not any wind at all. There were so many fish I logged it on my Lowrance recorder for future reference. I don't thing I have ever seen a screen so loaded with fish.
Here is Mark fighting a nice fish to the boat.Mark and Anthony decided to keep two fish for the table.
It was a fun day with lots of action.
Another excellent day on the water.
THE FISHING IS NOW EXCELLENT AND I HAVE A COUPLE OF OPEN DAYS NEXT WEEK. IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO THE ACTION DROP ME AN EMAIL AT CAPTAL@SKIMMEROUTDOORS.COM TO SET UP A DATE.
Captain Al Lorenzetti11/2/2010 Billy Connaughton with the first place Bass weighing in at 33.5 pounds. The fish was caught in the ocean east of the inlet. Slow jigging was the key to their success. Billy fished on Ray Bartlett's 22' Boston Whaler along with Brian Romeyk. Click Here to view all the images

Today I fished the Riverview Striped Bass Tournament with Tom Reilly, Jim and Bill on Tom's 32 Regulator "Life of Reilly".
We had a great day of fishing with over 40 bass on jigs and plugs in the ocean.
We did place at #15 with a fish just over 24 pounds caught on a plug in 70 feet of water. The fish were on top and the big yellow Danny plugs worked well but our winning fish was caught on a Gary Soldati Blue plug and was caught by Tom.
The Tournament winner was caught by Billy Connaughton on Ray Bartlet's boat and weighed just over 33 pounds and was caught on a jig in the ocean.
The winner of the Striped Bass Release Photo Contest is Mike Nelson and he will receive a $500 prize donated by Ray Bartlet of the UPS stores in Babylon and Long Beach.
The action is fantastic in the ocean 10 to 15 miles east of Fire Island Inlet.
A great day on the water.
More reports will be posted.
