Weight - 20 lbs 10.4 ozs !!!!!
Length - 30 1/4 inches.
Girth - 22 inches.
Angler: Yakov Elkin
Father and son team up to land the pending New York state record blackfish record. Eilya ( the son of the team) put his boat over a local piece of bottom and his dad finished the job. What would otherwise be an average blackfish trip with a nice limit of tog including a 10 ½ kicker fish suddenly became the trip of a lifetime. When Yakov set the hook, he knew he was into a nice fish right away. It was not until 1/2 way up that the realization of just how nice this fish was started to kick in. A few minutes later Eilya masterfully nets the tog for Yakov and the 2 anglers start go back and forth with there respectful guesses of the weight. Neither angler imagined 20 lbs!
So they dig out a scale and of course with a rocking boat it was impossible to get a accurate reading, BUT at no point while the scale numbers swung back and forth with the rocking boat did the numbers go below 20 1/4 lbs. Now i was flying home from a trip to the carib. when I received the call. My first call was to EC newell, I knew he would be as excited about this news as I was, but being in a airport it turns out my message was so muffled that he really could not make out my news. Now my biggest local fish to date is a little over 16 lbs some years back, which a member of my club, who is a member of the American Littoral Society convinced me to tag release it. I have since released 5 fish between 11 and 14 1/2 lbs. I suggested this to Eliya and he thought it was a great idea.So thank you to Stuart Fries for his help tagging the fish. Thank you as well to the entire staff at Michael's bait and tackle for staying open late and doing the weigh in. This is just a quick blurb I wanted to pass along to you guys here.... more to follow. ... ohh and of course pics to follow too.

Hurricane Bill changed the Fire Island Inlet over the weekend. Barry of Saltaire Fire Island sent this image of what's left of the sand bar at the mouth of the inlet. There is now an Island in the inlet.
Thanks Barry

The Tiki Bar at Frank and Dick's is now Open! My wife and I went for a sun set cruise and stopped by the latests renovation at the Frank and Dicks bait station. Word traveled fast that the Tiki bar was open although their grand opening will not be until 4th of July. If you have not been to the new frank and dick's you must stop by.

I received an email from a client, Bob Bauer about a shark sighting in the bay.
He got the photo from his friend Dave who took the picture Sunday at Tobay Cove beach. He said there were a lot of people including DEC on the beach watching.
It is thought to be a thresher shark about 10 to 14 feet long.
I would have to agree because of the small lobe just about at the end of the tail fin and the great distance from the tail fin to the dorsal fin.
I would also guess that it followed bunker schools in from the ocean. Sounds like it might be time to start shark fishing however I would think chances would be better in the ocean than in Tobay Cove. I would also think twice before going swimming in any of the deep coves along the State Channel.
